    Richard Southall

    Background

    Richard is a member of Middle Temple and was called to the Bar in 1983. Following pupillage with James Munby (now Lord Justice Munby) Richard joined 2 Harcourt Buildings in the Temple (relocating to 17 Bedford Row in 1990). In 2004, after twenty years at the Bar, Richard was asked to join a West End Solicitors’ practice in order to establish a niche litigation department for its high profile clients. In June 2009 Richard Hierons invited him to work with him in founding the firm of Hierons. Together they are the founders of Hierons LLP.

    Experience

    During his time at the Bar Richard developed a substantial practice, initially focusing on commercial contract and property litigation and subsequently developing a specialisation in lenders’ claims against their professional advisers and insolvent recovery work. Richard has a number of reported cases including Zandfarid v BCCI [1996] 1 WLR 1420 (s.269 Insolvency Act 1986), Barclays Bank Plc v Martin (CA) (conjoined appeal with Royal Bank of Scotland v Etridge (No. 2) [1998] 4 All ER 705), Berkshire Capital Funding Limited v Street [1999] 78 P & CR 321 (CA) and Sutherland & Ors v V2 Music & Ors [2002] EWHC14 (Ch), [2002] EMLR 28 (passing off). As Head of Litigation at the West End firm he grew the department from a team of two solicitors to fourteen by the beginning of 2008. The client base included Royal Families from the Middle East and North Africa, several Embassies, four of the top ten Asian billionaires based in London, their groups of companies and many high net worth individuals. His team’s most notable successes came in the ground-breaking case of Feetum & Ors [2006] 2 BLCL102 and Kahn v Dunlop Haywards (DHL) Ltd [2007] All ER (D) QBD.

    Richard Hierons

    Richard is a corporate lawyer who specialises in representing high net worth individuals and corporate clients over a wide range of corporate and commercial matters, including mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions and corporate finance. Richard has over thirty years’ UK and international experience and, after several years at a ‘magic circle’ firm, he became a partner in other substantial City law firms before establishing Hierons in 2009. Richard has spoken at numerous conferences, including delivering seminars on London IPOs at Harvard and at the Adam Smith Institute.

    • Acting for an international property group in an arbitration administered by the Stockholm Chamber of commerce relating to its acquisition of a new commercial development in Moscow.

    Vanessa Evanson-Goddard

    Background

    Vanessa is a corporate lawyer with experience in a wide range of corporate, finance and commercial matters including mergers and acquisitions, equity capital markets, private equity and syndicated finance transactions. She has also spent time working directly with clients on secondments with the corporate finance team at Canaccord Genuity and the in-house legal team at Coutts & Co. Vanessa trained and qualified at the London office of an international US law firm (Reed Smith LLP) where she spent a number of years in the Business and Regulatory Group. She has a degree in Law and American Legal Systems (LLB Hons) having studied at the University of East Anglia and the University of British Columbia.

    Smeetesh Kakkad

    Background

    Smeetesh is a dispute resolution lawyer who specialises in commercial litigation and arbitration, with an emphasis on contract claims, joint venture, shareholder and partnership disputes, IP/IT, international trade and civil fraud.     Background

    Tim joined Hierons as a paralegal and has assisted on a number of substantial corporate matters. He became a trainee solicitor in 2012 and has qualified on 1st April 2014.

    Tim spent four years working for an agency-only broker in the City before studying Law and Business Administration at the University of Kent where he achieved first class honours. He completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the College of Law.
